Puppy Sleep Mask Tutorial

Hello ya'll, today I'm making a puppy dog sleep mask and I got the idea from the same book my last two projects and posts were from. To make this sleep mask you need white, tan or grey, and black felt, black and brown embroidery thread, you also need one eleven inch piece of elastic. If you want to get extra creative, you could do the advanced version puppy mask I designed to make your dog a Dalmatian pup!

I found that when you are practicing for the first time it could be a little extra tricky to do the spots on the advanced version, but if you are really good at sewing then you can make your first pup a Dalmatian but that is up to you. This project includes machine sewing at the very end, you'll want white sewing thread on your machine and bobbin. You can download the pattern pieces here, it's just a single 8.5" by 11" image that can be printed (choose fit to paper setting) and cut out.

Now to make the pup mask you first cut out the front and back parts of the sleep mask, then you cut out the facial details and ears. If you are making a Dalmatian then you should cut out the spots for the Dalmatian. The spots can be what ever size and shape you would like but make sure that the spots are not bigger than the face of the dog or too small to stitch around.

Now that you have the felt cut out you, thread the needle with brown embroidery thread and pin the nose and snout to the big piece that is the front of the the face mask. Once the snout and nose are properly fastened on you should start sewing them to the face with a running stitch starting at the bottom of the nose, going around the nose and then around the snout, ending at the edge of the nose.

Once your done, if you are making a Dalmatian then you should do the spots, sew them on with a running stitch. When the snout and spot are stitched on, you should use a pencil to create a slightly curved eye shape and using black embroidery thread embroider on the eyes and lashes. Then you'll prepare to use the sewing machine to sew all the rest of the pieces together. Sandwiching the pieces between the front and back layers (wrong sides together) put the ears at the top and pin them down. Put the elastic at the sides of the face in between the two layers and pin. Finally you can use the sewing machine and start sewing! Sew around the edge of the sleep mask shape, with about 1/8" seam, stitch around the entire shape of the mask (just the bean shape, not around the ears) starting at the center of one of the ears so that your start/stop location is disguised by the ears when they are flopped down.

Now that you're done you have a cool sleep mask! I would love to see yours if you make one, put them in the comments on my Facebook post! Goodbye! Happy sewing!
